Four Brains
Research has shown that every human being has three distinct, yet interconnected brains.
-
The thinking brain or neocortex is found in higher primates, such as chimpanzees, apes and human beings. This gives us the ability to analyze, conceptualize and strategize.
-
The reptilian brain or body brain is found in reptiles. The reptilian brain governs involuntary body functions, like
breathing, digestion and heart beat.
-
The emotional brain or limbic system is found in animals. Dogs and cats can form emotional bonds that lizards and other reptiles don’t experience.
The human brain has gone through millions of years of evolution to get where it is today. But the field of neurocardiology has recently discovered the existence of a fourth brain.
"The heart is the emperor in the system."
- Folker Meissner, MD
Dr. J. Andrew Armour, a pioneer in neurocardiology, introduced the concept of a heart brain in 1991. He discovered that the heart has a nervous system of its own, which works independently of the cranial brain. Communication between the heart and the cranial brain is an ongoing, two-way dialogue, with each one influencing the other.
In the "The Resonant Heart", Rollin McCraty, Raymond Trevor Bradley and Dana Tomasino write that, "The nervous system within the heart enables the heart to learn, remember, and make decisions independent of the brain's cerebral cortex. The heart can do this because about 60% of heart cells are ‘neural cells', which function similarly to those in the brain."
I call the heart brain the spiritual brain, because of the heart’s association with joy, love and compassion.
4DQ® is four-dimensional intelligence because it utilizes all four brains.
